Dash (--)
Also: -- · double dash · double hyphen · interruption
In a script, a dash is typed as two hyphens (--). In dialogue it shows a character getting cut off, or cutting themselves off, mid-sentence. In action it adds a sudden pause or a quick turn in the moment.
A line that ends in -- tells the actor the thought was interrupted, either by someone else or by the speaker changing their mind. It reads fast and sharp, unlike an ellipsis, which trails off.
In action lines, a dash can set up a surprise: "Sam opens the door -- and there is nobody there." Use it to control rhythm, not as decoration.
